Damn you myspacers: A lesson in Indie
Hey. So I'm totally a myspace whore, and I send annoying random messages to people so that they will come and check out this website.
A common message: Hey, come check out my FreeIndie music website!
Here is a common reply: INDIE MUSIC SUX!
Now, I want to make sure everyone knows what my website is all about. I bet I'm preaching to the choir with this, but whatever.
When I say my site is about Indie music, that does not mean that the bands I talk about all sound like Modest Mouse. Indie is not a genre
All that Indie means is that the act is not signed to a major label. Indie can be rock, rap, hip hop, punk, country... The bands I post on this site are the ones that do not receive the recognition they deserve. Signing to a label can mean the end of originality for a musical act, so an independent career is a path that many musicians take to retain their freedoms to be heard as they want to be heard. I'm here to help those people, and to hook everyone else up with their music.
So when somebody says "indie sucks," they are pretty much saying all music sucks, unless its put out by a major label, and played on heavy rotation on whatever MTV station still plays videos.
If you want to hear more about why I started this site, read the extended entry.
Before my site was a blog, this Mission Statement was featured on the front page:
Here's a fun fact for all you fact-loving fun people:
The entertainment industry is primarily controlled by six companies! That's right. Just six: Disney, Vivendi, Sony, Viacom, NewsCorp and Time Warner.
Each of these mammoths have sectors that specialize in music, movies, radio, magazines, TV, books, and just about anything else you can think of that is related to entertainment. The goal for each sector is to find talent, develop it, and finally distribute its product to as much of the public as possible. TV networks find talented writers, fund the development of a TV show, and then air the episodes to hooked viewers. Film companies find a script, fund the production of the movie, and distribute it to packed movie houses. Book publishers find authors, publish their books, and distribute them to busy book stores.
So what happens with music? Well, a record label find an artist, funds the production of a record, and distributes the record to stores (It's a bit more complicated than that, but for your attention's sake, I'll leave it at that). So now an artist has a record available to everyone. But how are people going to know if the record is any good? Well, thats when the record label looks at the other sectors in the corporation for help. Since the mammoth also owns radio and television networks, the label can use those two outlets as resources for exposure. The radio station will play the record's hit single continuously until people's ears bleed, while the TV network will play the artist's music video until people grow bored with it.
Unfortunatly, there are a plethora of extremly talented artists who are overlooked by record labels. Because they are not on a label, they do not have as many opportunities for exposure. As a result of this entertainment business model, many brilliant songs drown into the depths of obscurity, while mainstream media continues to feed its loyal public non-stop helpings of over-produced boy bands and slutty divas. Until recently, whatever played on radio or TV was what the majority was limited to as far as entertainment. But in the past few years, we have all become accustomed to a new medium that is revolutionizing the entire entertainment business world.
Thanks to the proliferation of broadband internet access, music lovers now have the ability to scour websites like myspace.com and purevolume.com in search of great music that hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. These two website have allowed independent artists to make their music available to everyone. But both sites feature over 20,000 artists! Well, that makes your quest for better music even harder. If you want to find that new band that'll rock your socks off, you're going to have to listen to 9,000 recordings of idiots singing Abba in the shower. Once you find an artist whose got some talent, you're limited to only four of their songs!
FreeIndie.Com is here to fix that by bringing you free full albums from great musicians. The staff at FreeIndie has spent the past two years weeding out the crap. When the dust cleared, we were left with brilliant rockstars and gifted musicians. Redundent as that might be, FreeIndie.com now boasts the cream of the crop in unheard music. And we want to give it to you - - FOR FREE! And we're not talking one or two songs by each artists. We are talking about entire albums. FOR FREE!! That's a twelve dollar value for nothing. Did I mention, the albums are FREE!!?? And you don't even have to go through an annoying sign up page! Just download! FOR FREE! It doesn't get much better than that...unless of course we sent packages of money and hookers to your doorstep.
So the point is across. This website isn't going to cost you anything. But is this why the word "free" is the defining adjective in FreeIndie.com? Well, yeah, partly. But open your minds, and think of the word free as a liberation. A liberation from an era where an individual's taste in music was determined by the mainstream media. A liberation from unheard music that should be left unheard. And finally, a liberation from the guilt of downloading free music. The music on this website was made to be heard. The artists want you to enjoy their songs. So what the hell are you doing still reading this crap? Go run wild. Find out all of the cool things this web site has to offer. Spread the word. Tell your friends about the site. This site starts a new era in entertainment. Buckle up, and enjoy the ride.

Hey, just wanted to say good luck with peddling indie music. I too have tried arguing with ignorant people that "indie" isn't a genre, as I listen to underground hip-hop and (used to) call it "indie" hip-hop. Problem is, there's so much "pseudo-indie-pop-rock" music in the marketplace (it's a product, not music) that it seems pointless trying to argue any more. The paradox of these people (say "Bloc Party" fans, for example) is that they are supporting major-label artists who, by definition, are LESS indie than anything on a DIY/independent label. Or, they are on large TECHNICALLY independent labels that are picked up and distributed by majors. It's a bourgeois attitude adopted by this middle-class music elite (who ironically have no musical talent or taste) that are investing in some sort of apathetic, static, culture of cool. Want to help the children of tomorrow? Next time you see someone in stovepipe jeans, chucks and a sweater (badges optional) then set them on fire.
