BlindSwitch

Ever since Rivers Cuomo announced that Weezer was breaking up, I've been looking for a band that could give me my fill of catchy pop rock. BlindSwitch steps up to that challenge. Singer David Litvinsky fills his songs with original yet familiar chord progressions and melodies that will be left spinning in your head. BlindSwitch may be what you need to fill the void that Weezer left.

Semi-Precious Weapons

It's become a norm. Some guys just like to dress up like girls, and form glam bands. The term "glam-band" does not pack enough punch to describe Brooklyn's Semi-Precious Weapons. Showcasing a variety of styles, these guys can successfully rock hard and show their softer side while maintaining a signature "fu@k off" attitute. Their title track, Semi-Precious Weapons, fuses Jet's "Cold Hard Bitch" with that song from School of Rock. I love it.

The Heavycoats

It gets cold in Baltimore. Thank god for the Heavycoats. This four man rock band fuses modern rock styles with the sounds Brian Eno introduced in U2's Joshua Tree. Production quality is great. Recommended.

Jodi Jett

Recalling elements of downtown New York's folk-rock movement of the 1960's, Kansas native Jodi Jett revives the role of the poet-musician. Jett's commanding yet relaxed voice makes this album an easy, provocative listen. She is a Patti Smith for today's audiences.

School Boy Humor

It's a simple formula: (Teenage Angst + Tight Clothes) x Four Guys = Emo Band. Products of this simple equation, School Boy Humor successfully balances multi-layered vocal harmonies with their emotionally driven rock music. "Parting Words of Welcome" is a destined hit.

Maxitit

Have you ever heard of a lesbian rockabilly band? Me neither. Fueled by their uncontrollable estrogen, Maxitit has created music for angry females everywhere. Staples of the Los Angeles club scene, this spunky group brought their signature sound to CBGBs in NYC recently. I thought it would be a great place to pick up chicks. Needless to say, I went home empty handed. Hmm.

The Head Set

When major labels were eating up the "The" bands (The Strokes, The Hives, The Vines), they overlooked this gem. Out of Brooklyn comes The Head Set, a band that achieves a balance between soft melodies and punchy beats. Despite the various styles in the five songs below, the EP sounds solid on account of lead singer Jordan's consistent voice. I highly recommend these guys.

Damone, one of the newest additions to the Island Def Jam family, put out this humorous public service announcement:

Pretty funny, and very true. Every artist on my site lives like this. Support them.

If you want to check more Damone out, go to their myspace page. Check out "On Your Speakers." I saw them live, and they were unbelievable. It was like a rebirth of hair metal. \000/ Oh, and I have a crush on the lead singer, Noelle.

Velvet Trench Vibes

Velvet Trench Vibes, a Montreal-based hip hop group, exhibits loads of variety in their 26 track LP, Opium Lounge. Their collection is a cross-section of the past thirty years of urban music, sprinkled with beats that would make everyone from Bob Marley to Kanye West proud. These guys rap about everything from their hometown, to picking up underage girls. Let's Roll is a must have.
