Looks like the IPod has its first major competitor. This is from today's Wall Street Journal:

Might want to get a picture of what the iPod actually looks like so you don't seem like a big Zune promoter

Nah... the screen resolution is the same between the two screens, so even if one's physically larger, you won't get better quality from it.
Also, the "scroll buttons" on the Zune are just that—a set of buttons. Imagine clicking 100's of times to get through a music library... ouch.
Oh, and no Mac support for the Zune. So it's a non-starter for a lot of us music-y people.

I think the iPod already had major competition in the Creative Zen Vision which I happen to own and LOVE.
Posted by: Charlotte | November 9, 2006 7:10 PM
nope. i love my iPod Video. nothing short of finding out that iPods cause cancer, eat babies, and were secretly responsible for the Holocaust could make me change brands.
Posted by: kendall | November 9, 2006 9:43 PM
The dimensions are wrong. The Zune is not 1/16" thin.
Posted by: Chris | November 10, 2006 12:32 PM
No way am I switching if this is what Zune is offering. The only "improvements" it offers aren't really improvements at all. The WiFi thing is useless -- it only works with people in the same room, and only allows you to listen to the song 3 times. And while it has a bigger screen, the resolution is worse, making it pretty useless.
I'll hold out for the next gen iPod.
And who wants an MP3 player that looks like a brown turd?

If this is a side-by-side comparison, then the image of the iPod above should be shorter.

Just wait for the new iPod. It will leave Zune even further behind. Microsoft is super rich company, and with all the money for R&D, i can't believe it can't innovate and come up with better ideas. It's only good with making copies with not much improvement. So, it's up to you to decide. I'm sticking with my iPod and waiting for the brand new iPod that's coming very soon.
Posted by: roger | November 17, 2006 1:19 AM
Ha, just as suspected. Microsoft has been stealing Apple's ideas for years. It was just a matter of time before Microsoft trie to take another idea and make it their own. Remake's will never stand up to the original. I'm sticking with the Ipod.

well i like my zune a whole lot more than my ipod...it seems more durable and i like the software because it updates your songs automaticly. the screen is better than the ipods because you could watch widscreen movies on it perfect.plus it has a radio and wifi and its easyer to use the buttons on it than that awful scroll wheel on the ipod, expecially when your driving.the zune also doesnt get scratched as easy as the ipod and you dont realy get those finger marks on the zune.o yeah and you dont even have to budge to add songs to your library, it does it automatic. so in my opionion the zune is the best mp3 player yet...until the next generation of zune comes out.ooooohhhhh and the updating is really better on the zune because of the wifi......
Posted by: zombie | November 19, 2006 12:06 AM
i have to agree with zombie about the part of the durability because ive droped my zune and nothing happend to it and it was on concrete. ive had 3 ipods already and their sort of geting old to me already. i acutally like my zune better than my 30 gig ipod.

I plan on getting a Zune for Christmas!
Posted by: Scorpion | November 19, 2006 4:22 AM
I'm getting a zune. At lease I could drag and drop songs from any computer instead of needing I tunes to transfer song.

I switched! Really!
I happen to like the "rental" pricing model for music. Paying $15/month to get access to a 2 Million+ music library works well for me.
Maybe I'm in the minority, because I don't steal music. And if you don't steal music, the rental model is a great one.

zune!
i never had an iPod, and i'm a clumsy guy so the durability will come in handy.

Hey, I'm gonna switch. I have an Ipod and im gettin gthe Zune for X-mas...gonna ake the big switch. Honestly its just because it's something new, my Ipod is getting kind of old and its gone thru many problems and ive only had it for about 8 months and already i had to get it checked out and shipped in and stuff. The Zune looks sweet and im not saying its better than the Ipod because i honestly think the Ipod is good its just something different.
Posted by: Justin | November 27, 2006 12:00 AM
I dont know about you guys but i think the zune looks way cooler. however the screen being the same resolution as the ipods only bigger kinda pisses me off. but i agree with charlotte in that the ipod did already have a competitor in the Creative Zen Vision which i personally like better than both the zune and the ipod although i do have an ipod
Posted by: john doe | December 3, 2006 1:10 PM
The zunes is way much super duper better than Ipod I have both an Ipod and a Zune, both of them are good ,but the zune has some features that are way better like wifi there you could share song Ipod odsnet hae that and Fm radio. Tjhats all Ipod i good, but ill give apiod video 9.75 and the zune 9.99 out of 10

im rilly nt sure. I have neither an ipod or a zune. I have a little crappy iriver the screen is about .05 inches by 1 inch literally. my friend is getting a zune, and the big screen looks appealing, but im nt sure whether to get an ipod or a zune. everybody is rilly happy with their ipods but the wifi thing sounds really cool. But i am nt sure about this zune marketplace. Someone tell me if i could drag my prepurchased itunes files onto my new zune. please help.

Yes, you can sync (or "drag & drop" in lamest terms) music and video to your zune from iTunes or Windows Media Player.
Posted by: Michael | December 10, 2006 1:35 AM
zuneeeeeeeee is so much beta then that small ipod how am i suppose to look at that on a long trip and first drop of the ipod it breaks and im not a big apple love have u ever seen the compouter they are so confusing and they are lame
Posted by: lolo | December 18, 2006 8:15 AM
i have an ipod, but when i saw the zune i got soo excited... i got the zune this christmas and its sooo much better... i actually felt cool playing with the zune, cause i can change the background every week.. and its just more colorful... haha.. i really love the Zune =D
videos are also great, the ipod video makes me sleepy... now i can really watch movies in this one.

i've looked at sooooo many zune vs. ipod blogs it's not even funny! yeah, the only thing that's missing is the fact that everything that microsoft has ever made has turned into gold. the pc, the xbox, and now, the hopeful zune. you know, i don't care if microsoft copied zune from the ipod. they make everything better than mac's versions.
Posted by: Tedd | February 14, 2007 9:45 PM
ok, i just like the guy above had a crappy little iriver and i stuck it out with it for 2 years. now it finally broke and im deciding to get and ipod or a zune. im leaning towards zune even though everywhere on the internet they talk about how bad it is. i actually think it looks pretty cool. i am a big fan of the drag and drop and dont really care about the wifi. ive always been a big fan of microsoft. either way, ipod or zune it'll be a step up from my 2004 ed. iriver.

I have owned both zune and ipod.
their are three things that matter to me
1. sound quality
2. navigation
3. looks
1. zune wins hands down. That is why i returned the ipod.
2. the scroll wheel might be "cooler". It is pretty innovative and it is pretty "neat", I really liked it alot. But for funtionality, zune wins. Why would you make circles with your thumb when you can just press a button, its much simpler that way. In response to someone, no you dont need to tap the button a thousand times when scrolling, you just simply hold the button down and watch as the ultra scroll speed goes into effect with capital letters indicating where your at in the alphabet.
3. Zune is stronger and has a higher quality build. I played with both of them for long enough, and the black zune is more applealing to my eye

OK, this confused me:
"Yes, you can sync (or "drag & drop" in lamest terms) music and video to your zune from iTunes or Windows Media Player."
...Since Dragging and Dropping is what you do in Windows with a memory stick or non-ipod mp3, and sync is what you do from itunes or a palm pilot.
Which is it? Can you drop a .avi or .wmv from windows explorer to your device and watch it, or do you need to use the Zune software for some kind of lame conversion. That's why I hate itunes...stupid sync-ing instead of d&d.
And yes, by all means show the ACTUAL size of the ipod so you can see how tiny that screen really is.
Let's face it, neither of these are small compared to flash-mem players.

I Have the zune and it is ace, so buy it now!
Posted by: Jordan | May 13, 2007 5:57 PM
What is it really like to move files for the zune? Is it really like a drag and drop? Or would you have to use the zune app. to transfer files?
Posted by: anthony | May 24, 2007 11:13 PM
I got sick of having to re-boot my 60G ipod so bought a Zune - There is no competition - Zune is the best by far! Easier and faster. Leo Laporte not liking the Zune due to DRM just shows how much of an Apple drone he is...if he gets one and uses it the tune will change for sure...

i have had my 30gig iPod video for little over a year now and imo they are gay.
1.the scroll wheel sucks
2.no radio
3.cant have custom backgrounds
4.its not that appealing to the eye
5.apple sucks
but now i just won a zune off of live search club and i am very excited for it to come so i can trash my ipod.
Posted by: kyle | July 7, 2007 8:26 PM
i just got my zune.... i cant believe how much better this thing is than the iPod..its sad that when you say the word zune no one really knows what your talking about, if people would just get the word iPod out of there heads,,,well what im trying to say is that the zune need more recognition.
you know what i mean?
Posted by: Tyler | July 10, 2007 3:31 AM
I won 2 zunes off of microsoft club live and got leather cases too. After about a week of using them, I sold my two ipod 30gb's on ebay. You just can't beat the zune right now. 6 months from now, who knows what will be out there. There are many hacks that can be done to the zune. I hated itunes so I had to hack my ipods, zune - there are hacks out there, but you really don't need to...

I've had extensive experience with both iPod and Zune, and i would say hands down, Zune is the higher quality, more reliable, easiest to use device of the two. Despite the fact that they have the same resolution, the zune's screen size makes all the difference. Not to mention the radio, and wifi. In fact, in upcoming years, Ford and Microsoft are collaborating to make a "WiFi Enabled Car" so to speak. This will let zune users simply speak a command, such as "Playlist, Jam" and the car will transmit that info to the Zune. Thinking Ipod? Think again.
Posted by: MB | August 15, 2007 5:55 PM
Ipod may have the touch pad but in the upcoming zune with a touch pad and 80GB at the same $249 I think that the zune is better and you get more colors than just black white and a mix of black and red. With Zune you get more colors and more special edition zunes such as Halo 3 and wish Y yandel zunes. I am a proud owner of the halo 3 zune and I also used to own an Ipod video 30GB. plus the new zune is going to have podcast on them and the old ones will get an online software update that allows the same stuff on Nov. 13, 2007

I forgot one thing that the zune has better NO SENDING IN MY IPOD FOR BREAKING ALL OF THE TIME.
F*** IPOD GET A ZUNE
Posted by: Smith | October 24, 2007 11:04 PM
hey, does anyone want to explain to me how you download songs from limewire onto your zune, is it easier to download limewire to a zune or a ipod?
Posted by: kate | November 12, 2007 9:20 PM
Either your just retarded or you dont know how to hold down the down arrow, You can scroll as fast as you want.
Posted by: Mike | November 19, 2007 6:31 PM
um let me just say as a owner of a zune and ipod video i think that Zune is better than ipod now able to use podcast and you dont have to click over and over its called holding the button down and letting it go when you get to your song
you can also have a easy time with getting around your zune the ways around everything is so much more simple than ipods! i never use my ipod video anymore it just sits there and colects dust i think ill sell it on ebay it sucks so bad!
Posted by: Jared | November 19, 2007 11:40 PM
zoon is so much better than the ipod.
Posted by: sarah | November 24, 2007 11:36 PM
alright here's the thing about Zune's:
They really don't have much better features than the iPod, and the whole thing with the WiFi is that you can get a song sent from someone else (only if they have a Zune) and you can only listen to it three times. If you like it, you have to buy it. If you don't buy it within three days, it will be discarded from your Zune.
The whole screen size is actually a disadvantage, because it has a bigger screen size but the same resolution, so it's more pixely.
and i thought that Zunes couldn't play videos?
Anyways about the iPod's:
Hello, anyone ever heard of the touch or the iPhone? I have an iPod touch and it is AMAZING. It also has WiFi but better because you can go on facebook and YouTube and you can type in a URL. Plus when you walk into Starbucks with them, the song that's playing pops up as well as the ast 10 songs that Starbucks played, and you can buy them. Also, you can get the iTunes music store right on your iPod so you don't need a omputer to buy songs. Also, you can look at songs through coverflow when you rotate your iTouch sideways. Plus you can change your background and make it pretty! It is the coolest thing I've ever seen. But even without the iTouch, iPod's and Zunes are the same thing, iPod's are a little better. Zune's i admit look cooler but still there is no way I'm switching.
iPod's rock!

Using lime wire with a zune/ipod
with an ipod you must download it from limewire, save it in a music folder save it to i tunes then download it to your ipod
with a zune all you do is drag it to a folder the drag it to a zune
it is much much easier ZUNE WINS
Posted by: Peggy | December 28, 2007 5:17 PM
I just got a zune for christmas, and I have to say, it is awsome. I have also owned a ipod. For the zune you have a bigger screen, more durability, wifi, drag and drop feature, and you dont need itunes to use it. The ipods are less durable and have a smaller screen, and you need itunes to use it. Zune is bigger, but ipod is smaller. in my opinion, Zune wins hands down

Wow yes i am a fan of The Majority of Apple's Merchandise. Though Ipods Suck! They freeze they Don't have an eazy Access to Shuffle. Get a zune i Promise you they are worth your while. They Have the ability To Share music with your friends and Sure you have to be in the same room as the other Device. But it is an upgrade to The ipod That has nothing like that at all.
so Dont Bash the Zune if you dont know what you are talking about!
n00b!

My ipod was sold on ebay 1 week after I bought the zune. I dont miss it at all - the Zune is awesome, better software, better player, better everything. The Zune is my fourth mp3 player and it is definitely my favorite. (I had 2 Nano's and 1 Classic). Anyway - to all the ipod guys hoping to one day swallow steve jobs spunk - BUY A ZUNE!
Posted by: i love my zune | March 9, 2008 12:20 PM
Bought my Zune on ebay. It kicks. I love it. my wife and I shoot tunes back and forth on the wireless, very cool, and I like FM radio. Video play is great. Also, It's really easy to use. Next, I'm going to get ab 80 gig.
Posted by: Rich Allen | March 21, 2008 3:59 PM
ZUNE!!! Lol. If you bought a Mac and you can only buy an Ipod? That's your fault, Macs suck.
When you're scrolling though music on the Zune, you don't have to keep clicking... It's called holding the button down.
