Getting on my Soapbox: Radio Politics

Two weeks ago, the JV and Elvis "Doghouse" show on 92.3 Free FM (CBS radio) in NYC was suspended because of a prank call to an Asian restaurant. "The Doghouse" has been a friend to FreeIndie, and has interviewed a number of our favorite bands (A Brief Smile, Valeze and Cities on Fire). Before I defend these guys, I'll admit that they're total d-bags. They exploit every stereotype, and are rude to their guests. When Brief Smile was on the show, the hosts ripped on a band member for being bisexual. Despite their insensitive commentary, JV and Elvis make their listeners laugh - - which is what they are paid to do.

Doghouse was suspended because the OCA (Organization of Chinese Americans) issued a complaint to CBS. Pressured by the recent Imus hype and sensitive sponsors, the broadcasting network took action to appear responsible. It was not because they cared about the OCA. If ILGA (International Lesbian and Gay Association) complained because of the incident with Brief Smile, CBS would likely suspend the show to avoid looking homophobic. If the NGA (National Gardening Association) complained about a prank call to a flower shop, CBS would likely suspend the show to appease environmentalists. The Doghouse suspension was the result of large scale media politics - - There is nothing more threatening to freedom of speech than sensitive sponsors.

So, I'm starting a petition. If you're sick of the ridiculous politics that take place in popular media, leave a comment with your name and city. Digg the story and link to it in your own blogs if you can. I'll make sure this gets out to the right people. If you disagree with whatever I said above, please leave your thoughts.

People need to start learning when to take a joke. The suspension of JV and Elvis was absolutely ridiculous considering the fact that a lot of Chinese American New Yorkers found the prank phone call funny.

You know damn well I agree Mike. Humor is not hate! Unless you hate humor...

Great website btw. Thanks for all of your work!

I live near Detroit, and have never heard these guys, so this is just my take on the issue. When I hear racist comments, or put-downs of any group, I judge them like this: Is the comment used to mock the people who usually make those comments -- like Steven Colbert does, or does it give legitimacy to the people who use those comments against other groups to keep them "in their place." Just because it's humor doesn't mean it's all the same.

P.S. Love the music you post. THANKS.

It's unbelievable that it's gotten to this point in talk radio... last I heard, people do have the freedom to turn the radio off or turn the dial.

And the Dog House is part of a medium that is comedic, whether you get the joke or not.

If I don't like something on tv or radio, I turn the channel. I love Jv & Elvis and they are funny. If you can't take a joke, get the f out.

Thank you for supporting the DogHouse. The homoginization of all entertainment has to stop. Entertainment from "The View" to Gangsta Rap should be edgy, oppinionated and unaffraid to offend. That is what makes it fun. If you are offended by jokes-turn the channel and let me enjoy my show. Unfortunately CBS is forcing their jocks to water down their shows- less fun- lower ratings result in reformatting- and we could lose the show after all.

I'm a huge JV and Elvis fan. I think they're getting totally railed due to the Imus crap, and I hope CBS doesn't make the same mistake twice.

I also respect 1000% you for supporting this issue even though you're not a fan of them.

Thanks.

I want to thank you for defending the Doghouse. Unlike at least one of their colleagues, you set aside personal feelings for them and addressed the issue at hand, which is the political tactics used by miopic overly-sensitive special interest groups to scare everyone into running everything by them, before saying anything.

Guy Ioki tried and failed with Sarah Silverman, Sharpton and Jackson succeeded with Imus, and now the OCA is trying it with the Doghouse.

It's not a joke if the people they are making fun of don't think it's a joke. So f off and make jokes on something else. This is the worst of all the incidents mentioned.

just to clarify the ILGA did issue a complaint to CBS, but it was ignored. You are right -- it is a direct result of the Don Imus incident, but regardless, this so-called 'shock jock' mentality is a direct result of a lack of intelligence. there are plenty of other ways to make people laugh.

one time is a joke, however they played this twice

Did you hear there big on air fight with Opie and Anthony back in November I think it was

In principle, I agree with what you are saying. I've always been a huge proponant of "If you don't like it, change the channel." However, CBS and America are not interchangable entities. The fact that "America" has to guarantee freedom of speech doesn't mean that the corporation that is CBS must extend the same right carte blanche to the people that it employs. I'm not saying it is right, but just as each of us is free to pursue our goals as best we can, so is CBS. CBS' goal is to make a profit, just like every other company in the world. If they think that in the current marketplace the actions of these two gentlemen will hurt the bottom line, they are not morally obligated to keep them on the air. The only way to get them back on the air, and prevent future incidents like this, is to show that losing their fan base costs CBS more money than if some sponsors pull out in protest, possibly across the entire network. Good luck, but I don't think an online petition is going to do that. Especially when these hacks come a dime a dozen and can replaced without the lowest common denominator of listeners even caring.

Also, the idiots hardly did themselves any favors when they replayed the show in direct retaliation to the OCA complaint.

FREE FM...Free speech on the radio aslong as you don't offend anyone..That should be the tagline of that station.

If CBSradio caves in and fires these guys for doing a great radio show day in and day out, because a SMALL SMALL group that doesn't represant shit got offended by a prank call... Well that opens the gates for every stupid special interest group to censor everything we as people can decide to listen to or watch...

TOTAL B.S... A pure witch hunt, I can decide as whoever was offended to listen or not, but don't take away my choice because you can't take a joke prank call.

comon! bring back the doghouse this monday! what is wrong with a phone joke?

this is so silly and frustrating. the group saw cbs as an injured animal and is going to get them a piece of air time and notoriety. why are shows like SNL, South Park and Chappelle's Show so popular? because they poke fun at everyone. we all get to laugh at each other which eases tension between people of different cultures. we should be breaking down the racial barrier but groups like this and people like sharpton want to keep it at attention so they can become known and have a "job". the sad part is that groups like this think they speak for all those people of that culture and they think they know what is best for people. ever hear different strokes for different folks? there was no hate speech here, there is no case here but they are milking this all the way home. if you dont like something, dont listen to it. just because you think it is offensive doesnt mean everyone else does. please stop telling me what i can and cannot listen too. im a big boy, i can decide for myself.

Please don't compare Dave Chappelle, Trey Parker and Matt Stone to these guys. On one hand you have three of the definitive comedic geniuses of our generation. On the other you have two admitted bigots who think it's the height of comedy to swear at girls who don't speak English well and order "flied lice." It's insulting to anyone who knows the difference between genuine satire and a cheap laugh.

Ugh, Radio DJ's are definitely on my hate list, but I agree. -- Madison, WI.

freedom of speech has been takin away. It was a PRANK call, if you dont like the show then simply turn the dial.

Freedom is speech is becoming a thing of the past, its very sad. People need to learn how to get a sense of humor, and if you do not appreciate the joke, change the station, if that many people are offended, and that many people stop listening, then their ratings drop and they are pulled off the air. However People who do listen to the show know they are actually not racists at all. They aren't always nice, but grow up people, take a joke. If we were still in school you'd be getting beat up. stop crying, thats what really makes people insensitive, we're sick of hearing people whine all the time.

These guys sound like total jerk offs, but that's the thing with freedom of speech...even these guys deserve a proper forum to air their view points. If they are being curtailed from a station like freefm, where are they supposed to go? Which means, essentially, where is the voice of the minority being expressed? To me that is the scariest part of this story.

I agree with every word. Without knowing what was actually said in the prank call in question, I can't say either way whether or not they deserved it.

As for "getting a sense of humor", people need to stop relying on racial stereotypes for their jokes. That was funny when I was in middle school. Grow up.

I don’t want to wait till the end of Summer :( , I want it now. Who with me?
save your time and join me. ;)
