Tokyo Police Club

Over the 6 month hiatus, I must have listened to Tokyo Police Club's latest album, Elephant Shell over a bajillion times. For all of you doubting mathematicians, rest asure -- a bajillion is a real number. Below is a small sampling of bass-heavy pop album, including Tom Campesino's remix of the pivotal tune, Tessellate.

The Bowery Riots

Remember the days of prohibition, zoot suits, and tommy guns? Probably not - - unless you're a senior citizen. The Bowery Riots revive the up-tempo sounds and styles of '50s big band, giving it a dirtier, relevant edge. You may recognize the lead singer from his other bands Rockets and Cars and Cities on Fire. Busy guy.

Tiffany Randol, lead singer of punk outfit Valeze, just released her solo EP "Kiss Me Kiss Me." Despite her cutesy image, the spunky redhead creates powerful music with her soulful vocals and passionate song-writing. Look out for her upcoming full length, Sammasati.

Indie synthfunk duo Chromeo is the musical collaboration of a Jewish singer/guitarist and an Arab keyboardist (if only politicians looked to electro for peace). The unlikely twosome create an intelligent mix of creative dance beats and catchy lyrics. Chromeo's catching on, jumping on tour with the Beastie Boys.

Brooklyn-based Harlem Shakes named themselves after their favorite dance move. Made up of recent ivy league grads, this quintet adds a sophisticated element to their catchy song writing. This is mellowed out garage rock at its finest.

Plastic Operator

Plastic Operator is an electronica pop duo that maintains a mellow sound, despite their multi-tracked arrangements. The duo met at Westminster University in London where they were both studying audio production - - an academic strength that carries through in their music. PO sounds like a male version of Freezepop.

Dan Deacon

The term "Experimental" doesn't begin to describe Dan Deacon's unique niche of music style. The soundsmith manipulates electronic frequencies to create a maelstrom of noise that can be considered both musical and story-like. Although Deacon is gaining loads of attention for his energetic and eccentric live show rather than his music, he is worth the download.
